Finland, a country of just over 5 million people, is known for many things – its amazing wilderness and pristine lakes that cover over 80% of the country, its share of the Nobel
-Prize winners, and its clever social policies. One thing that this small Nordic nation may not be well-known for, however, is its role in the world’s bicycle movement. Achievements by Finnish bicycle industry
-In the early 1900s, bicycles were an uncommon sight in Finland. Bicycles were often used for long-distance train journeys and freight transport.
The first bicycle manufacturing company was founded in 1907, but only a few years later (1910) the local bicycle industry developed considerably. By then nearly all town plans had a bicycle path connecting them to the country’s main highway.
-The first Finnish bicycle manufacturers were unable to export their products due to language issues, so they started exporting to Germany instead. However, when this actually became profitable enough – at the end of the 1920s – Finland became a major supplier of bicycles to Germany (and later also other countries).

The Finnish Prime Minister, Juha Sipilä, took to Twitter on Monday to criticize President Trump for not recognizing World Bicycle Day.
-“Dear @realDonaldTrump, #WorldBicycleDay is a global event celebrating the bicycle as a means of transportation and recreation.
It’s important that we all work together to improve access to bicycles for everyone.” Sipilä added that the “bicycle is a clean, sustainable, and efficient means of transportation.
-It’s also fun.”As per The Guardian , Sipilä was joined by top officials from around the world in supporting World Bicycle Day by participating in bike rides such as one run by the Dutch government — which included tweets on Twitter to promote the event.

-During the State of the Union address, President Trump said he wanted to make America “the clean energy superpower of the world.” He also talked about needing more sustainable modes of transportation, like bikes and other forms of cycling.
-In addition to this commitment to infrastructure projects that will benefit cyclists everywhere, he also used the opportunity to praise his daughter Ivana Trump and her husband Jared Kushner’s efforts in supporting cycling initiatives around the country.
-The BikeLab is a re-tooled version of a bicycle repair stand that can be built with simple tools accessible anywhere in any home or office for about $70. It provides four basic functions:

It is a workstand for carrying and building bicycles,

It is a platform to mount various parts such as a motor or front wheel,

it can function as a repair stand for wheel alignment and
4)
it can be used to house tools and parts.The BikeLab has the potential to provide many benefits to communities surrounding bike-friendly infrastructure.
-The most obvious is providing bike maintenance (and even maintenance on other forms of transportation) with little capital outlay and maximum convenience.
One of the features I’ve been looking forward to most about this project was that the BikeLab would be integrated into an existing network of bike-sharing stations, which will provide an additional benefit of more people being able to access bikes when they need them , as opposed to having to purchase one and return it at regular intervals.
-In addition, the bike theft rate in Grand Rapids is among the highest reported in the country, with an observed loss rate of 18.3 bikes per 1,000 (based on a study by Grand Valley State University),
-while normal bike ownership rates are less than 1%. The BikeLab could potentially be used as a storage area for bikes if riding becomes more inconvenient or dangerous due to weather or other factors that limit access to public transit options.
-And finally, there’s a potential opportunity for local business owners to offer bicycle repair services within their stores through the BikeLab, removing the need for people to drive into another city for this service when it would otherwise take little money
Electorally, finland will be great for 2020
With the impending 2020 U.S. Presidential election, Finland is watching intently. And as an important member of the European Union, Finland has watched with dismay as President Trump has alienated many other countries in Europe by his aggressive stance on trade and foreign policy.
But even as Finland watches the United States stumble, there is good news to report: Finland’s Prime Minister Juha Sipilä called out President Trump for World Bicycle Day.
-“We believe that investing in cycling can have a significant impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting health and well-being, and creating jobs,” Prime Minister Sipilä said in a statement. “That’s why we’re committed to increasing cycling participation, from childhood to old age.”
The message from Prime Minister Sipilä is clear: even as America falters, Finland will continue to lead the way on environmental issues and social justice.
President Trump has repeatedly shown his dislike for the environment by opposing efforts to fight climate change and supporting policies that hurt the environment.
Conclusion
It’s no secret that President Trump isn’t a huge fan of environmentalism. In fact, his administration has gone out of its way to roll back many environmental protections put in place by former President Obama.
-But even he had to admit that World Bicycle Day was a pretty great idea. The president sent out a tweet on Sunday praising Finland for their commitment to the environment and cycling culture, and urged other countries to do the same. It’s great to see world leaders coming together to support sustainable living practices, even if Trump himself doesn’t always get it right.
